Building scalable web apps with modern frontend frameworks
Scalability isn’t only about servers. Most web apps hit their limits in the codebase first: in tangled state, slow builds and features nobody dares to touch.
Choose boring foundations
Pick a well-supported framework your team knows and stay close to its conventions. React with Next.js, Vue with Nuxt and similar stacks are mature and well documented, which matters more over five years than any benchmark.
Structure by feature, not by file type
Grouping code by feature (billing, onboarding, reports) keeps related logic together and makes ownership clear. Shared components live in one place and stay generic. When a feature is removed, its folder goes with it.
Code that’s easy to delete is code that’s easy to change.
Be deliberate about data
Most complexity comes from state. Keep server data in a dedicated data-fetching layer with caching, keep UI state local, and resist global stores for things only one screen cares about.
- Type everything at the boundaries
- Render on the server where it helps speed and SEO
- Measure performance in CI, not after complaints
- Automate tests for the flows that make you money
